The Shibuya station square area management (the following, Shibuya Eli imitation) publishes "sustained town planning" and promotes town planning activity in Shibuya Station center five block.
We aimed at realizing making environment where artist could challenge as the part, doing public space from all over the redevelopment wealthily, "town which we pleased people's minds, and people wanted to walk" and started artist open call for participants plan "TYPELESS" in this year when we turned so that, well, kid and others came.
We met Kataoka of Embedded Blue (following, Embedded Blue) which had you participate for the first of "TYPELESS" this time and heard story about town and art of thought and Shibuya to this project.

Let's solve the issue of graffiti in front of Shibuya Station by power of art! Artist open call for participants plan "TYPELESS" started on theme called this and raised art works targeting at bridge piers of the station square for the first this time. At first, please let know process or thought that had you invite there public participation.
Embedded Blue Kataoka (following, Kataoka):
At first, originally there was thought to want to do approach that reached eyes of more people in what's called "art". We wanted to widen daily life with art more in Japan before scenery and life with art and sympathized with activity of the Shibuya station square area management that place that could play an active part of artist made very much and we felt that we wanted to participate there by all means and raised hand.
Yoshida:
We are glad that you can sympathize.
Presentation of art in city works in various city, but each city is thinking about art and thing called a person's point of contact in that. Originally culture called street art is in town called Shibuya and thinks that it is urban art that seems to be Shibuya that there is "picture" in scenery of town. This project may match town very much, too.
Kataoka:
Japan has predominantly less hardware to accept art than foreign countries. Such a way of thinking to turn a certain thing into work now inside like this time thinks that it is important at all in town planning and the city planning. We realize pillar roll which became stage this time by effort of many people including deregulation and think that it is significant. As art work enters view of people who visited Shibuya, scenery changes, and it is in impressive scenery. As Shibuya is place with high attention degree from overseas as doorway from the world, Japanese impressions change as scenery changes.
Yoshida:
So. We feel what's called possibility of that place some other time. As many people are based in that place and go into town, there is that it meets eyes of many people, and not only Shibuya but also Tokyo and Japanese impressions change.
We had you participate toward four artists this time, but what kind of concept would be chosen toward the artist in?
Kataoka:
We were conscious of a feeling of place characteristics and air called "Shibuya". When there was creation of what kind of artist in impression of place called "Shibuya" whom all had, we considered that it was more interesting. That thought from the side that we harmonized with the side that we excluded from impression of town called Shibuya daringly. And there is the side asking people considering, we do not have you receive as mere scenery and "will give what kind of action there" "why is it that there is art here?". We chose artist after having drawn the each person's style up how you were concerned through art with society how artist each person was opposite to art.
Yoshida:
This title is "YOU FEEL", is that from place "that we see and feel" of the present story?
Kataoka:
We thought that there was much to receive saying "you felt" that we said "YOU FEEL", but touched title for image that said that, if anything, we sensed and recognized or were conscious of the existence. With "art in public clearance" if have have such an attitude which think about "there is artist about this", and is absorbed, is glad.
Yoshida:
There may be much which we recognized only after this art entering that it is surely said that in the first place there is there pillar.
Kataoka:
So. We think that it is important thing very much that "recognizes". For example, Shibuya is said to be town which is diversity, but various discussions and actions have been already born about theme of "diversity". As action, we think that it is start to know that is different that we recognize that it is over there. We face each other in "existing" and are loaded "YOU FEEL" for such a throw for society when it is a chance to begin to think.
Yoshida:
Originally art enters pillar roll which was full of graffitis, and it may be to be meaning with art for Shibuya that such a message is posed.
Kataoka:
Well. It was very interesting experience that made pillar roll canvas. We inspected from various angles and located work that work read for each place that stopped and came loose as we drew on 360-degree pillar roll. We intended to go to the town of Shibuya and came to see work to bring element of street into and thought that we could make change of feeling of people who visited.
Yoshida:
We had you participate in project with genre called public art this time, but, as for Embedded Blue, what kind of activity is done with main?
Kataoka:
For axis, it is made with support of artwork of company and public clearance. We are thinking all the projects dealing with to be "small art festival" now. Artist makes cowound with area and gets people and industry. We aim at being able to perform that on bigger scale. Not only there is just work, and there is artist, but also designs project to exist as role to tie art and society. We feel that this project was activity that is significant in viewpoint called public clearance in viewpoint called support of artwork of company.
Yoshida:
We are very glad that you can say so as us. It is more convenient and fixes redevelopment of town in town reliable safely and it is what we build, but thinks that fun and new viewpoint are born in town more by increasing there art. Art includes hint that it is continued being town where town called Shibuya is interesting.
Kataoka:
There is contemplation in town called Shibuya and is very favorite town. Scenery with art becomes natural and thinks that by remaining in memory of young people visiting Shibuya now, how to catch and impression of sense of distance and town with art change in town. If this project is connected with the future when this town is new and opportunity of encounter with new sense of values, that is glad.
